Colombia v Uruguay preview
Colombia have picked up four points from their opening two World Cup qualifiers, winning their opening game at home against Venezuela 1-0 through Rafael Santos Borre’s goal, which was followed up by a goalless draw in Chile.
Nestor Lozano’s side head into the latest round of fixtures in third place in the 10-team table, of which the top six teams will qualify for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, USA and Mexico, with the seventh-placed finishers taking part in the inter-confederation play offs.
Colombia’s draw in Santiago last month saw their unbeaten run get extended to 13 matches in all competitions, of which they’ve won 10, including a 2-0 away win against Germany in June.
Los Cafeteros failed to qualify for the most recent World Cup in Qatar having reached the knockout stage of each of the previous two, and will be determined to book their place in the expanded finals in three years time.
Uruguay started their qualifying campaign with a 3-1 win over Chile in Montevideo but gave up a 1-0 lead in Quito to eventually fall to a 2-1 defeat against Ecuador.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side still sit fourth in the table though and will back themselves to qualify for a fifth World Cup in a row.
La Celeste‘s defeat in Ecuador ended a run of four victories in a row and five wins in their previous six matches following on from their disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar which ended in a group stage exit.
Recent meetings between the two teams have been tight, with three of the last four matches finishing as draws, though Uruguay did win 3-0 on their last trip to Colombia.
Bielsa holds a 5-2 winning record against Colombia from his eight previous times managing against them while in charge of Argentina and Chile.
Colombia v Uruguay betting tips
With the teams so evenly matched, a draw could be worth a punt on Thursday’s match, and Sky Bet are offering 15/2 odds for a goalless draw, or 7/2 for a score draw.
River Plate’s Uruguayan attacking midfielder Nicolas de la Cruz currently sits joint top of the goal scoring charts in South American World Cup qualification, and the same bookie are pricing him at 5/1toadd to his goal tally on Thursday.
